I think Ken Stott is the ideal Rebus, he carries it off well. John Hannah was totally wrong. What was so awful was squeezing the plots into one hour. Every one of Rankin's novels DEMANDS at least a full length movie. They are spoiled by being hacked by TV producers. When will these guys recognise that they don't have to squeeze everything into one-hour slots?
I'm new here and have only just discovered Inspector Rebus and am wondering if anyone knows in which order the series should be read, I shall be grateful if anyone knows.

Simply from start to finish, ie from Knots & Crosses through to Exit Music. Enjoy!
I don't see Peter Mullen as Rebus simply because he has too much of a broad Glasgow accent about him wheras Robert Carlyle already has the accent nailed (he's originally from Glasgow ain't he?). But I would prefer a big name local Edinburgh actor to play the part of Rebus, it would add tons of authenticity.
Jimmy,I think Peter Mullen would be great as Rebus, simply because he is such a talented actor and director. His range has made films like 'My Name Is Joe' and 'Miss Julie' so memorable.I also think his physical appearance would be suited to the role.
Watch John Hannah in HBO's "Spartacus"...........much much stronger character portrayal the his first "Rebus" work. Maybe it has more to do with direction than acting.
