I think the Wallander novels are perfect for any Rebus lover. Different personalities but plenty in common. I loved all eight and there's a new one - a final one - due out shortly.

DI Danny Isham in Adam Williams' books is also great. The first book 'The Future of the Past' is gripping. I think that's the only one that has come out so far but heard there may be a new one later this year

I enjoy all authors mentioned and recommend Stieg Larsson, not a Scot, but excellent all the same.

I just finished The Redemption of Alexander Seaton by Shona MacLean. It is set in Scotland in the 17th century. I bought it without knowing anything about it except the cover called it a mystery and there was a murder so that was a good start for me. I really enjoyed it because it was a mystery but also it delves into everyday life and the social order in the time period and hints at the roots of the Jacobite movement. Word on MacLean's website hints that this novel (her first) may be the beginning of a series of Alexander Seaton stories. I'm looking forward to more.

Two Australian authors I would highly recommend are Peter Temple and Michael Robotham. Peter's best two (The Broken Shore and Truth) are set in Melbourne and the south west coast of Victoria. Michael's (including the superb "Shatter") are set in the UK.

I have not read all posts so this may be a repeat.

Charlie Owen....... I have read two of his books. Foxtrot Oscar and Horses A%*e (ahem I mean ..... bum) If you like an anti hero (and who doesn't if the like Rebus) then this may tickle your fancy. Some of the stories here remind me of my fathers stories of late 60's policing in small town Scotland believe it or not. That was before the rubber heal squad really kicked off.

I also just finished a book called Lennox by Craig Russel about a post WW2 private eye in Glasgow.... a bit weird but a good read after you suspend your disbelief!

Wold love to know of any others who enjoyed or disliked these authors.

[quote="renbergs"]Being from Sweden I have to recommend a swedish writer: Henning Mankell. Read his book series about Kurt Wallander! But read them in chronological order. Wallander and Rebus have a lot in common, without getting too similar
Wallander is superior.
