Other good authors.

I have to defend Val McDermid. While I haven't read all her books I thought the ones I read were very worthwhile. I plan to get through them all eventually.

I would also recommend John Harvey's Charlie Resnick series and also his novel Gone to Ground.

My favourites (apart from IR of course) are Kathy Reichs and Michael Connelly.

Try Steig Larsson, 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'. You will no doubt find yourself wanting to read his two sequels, so you may as well buy them at the same time!

Sorry to repeat myself, but the Larsson books are SERIOUSLY good. I have never been hooked so completely by three novels before, and probably never will be again, as Larsson died of a massive heart attack after having submitted his novels to his publisher. I am 50-odd pages from the end of the third of his 'Millennium Trilogy' books. I love Ian Rankin's stuff, but I have never, ever, read anything like these novels (if only I could write like that!). I can't put the last book down (had to last night though, as it was 2am - and I don't go in for late nights these days).

Ian (Doctor Rankin) if you read this, and if you ever do get time to read other authors' novels, I think you will like Larsson's.

Just read on the internet that Elizabeth George mentions Rebus in one of her novels.Does anyone know which?

I love her Inspector Lynley series, have read all.Just can't imagine myself not noticing a reference to my favourite detective. Thanks. :?:

To answer my own question---This was in 'Careless In Red',the last Inspector Lynley novel, which i loved because it showed a different Lynley,in mourning and not wanting to continue as a detective.

After his wife's murder,he went hiking alone in Cornwall and became involved in a murder case.Of course,i now remember the reference to Rebus (vaguely) said by,i think, the female Detective in charge.

Are there any fans here who've seen the updated Sherlock Holmes? In the US,the first episode aired on PBS on Sunday, featuring a Holmes/Watson that,I suspect, some traditionalists will have a problem with. But I loved it.
Well written, fast paced and, best of all,2 actors who work well together.Benedict Cumberbatch,an actor i was not familiar with,is superb as a present day Sherlock, with his striking features and physical presence.
From the opening scenes with Martin Freeman,as Watson who was injured in Afghanistan,i was absorbed in the story.

I'm looking forward to Sunday's episode.

I really like Val McDermid too but alas I've read all her books. You might also enjoy Mark Billingham. His Tom Thorne character has some "Rebusisms" although Thorne is definitely an original. The novels take place in London and I have enjoyed touring London through this detective the same way I enjoyed Edinburgh through Rebus.

I've discovered a new author whose detective keeps the streets of Derby safe-ish. Damen Brook is a policeman on the trail of a serial killer in his debut The Reaper. This is seriously atmospheric stuff and v exciting at the end though not for the faint hearted. Can't say I've got into Stuart McBride because of the constant puerile interplay between Logan and his superior which I feel detracts from the plot.
