Whatever happened to Brian Holmes?

I just recently discovered the world of John Rebus and have (to the best of my knowledge) read all novels about Rebus and his world... Like most I do hope there will be more to come and from what I've read there just might!

My question though, I have seemed to miss out why Brian Holmes left the force?? Is it that I've just read through the novels too quickly or have I missed one?? (or more) Anyone to fill me in?

I think Brian was torn between the police force and his girlfriend (whose name I can't remember right now). They had a tumultuous relationship and she won him over. The girlfriend was a librarian. I think Rebus misses him too. You must have been reading a little too fast. No worries, you know you'll re-read all of them.

Nell Stapleton and Brian Holmes first appeared in 'Hide And Seek',the second Rebus novel,with Nell actually playing an important role at the end.We got to know them better in 'Strip Jack',the fourth in the series,Rebus spending an evening with the happy couple.
At first,I had thought Holmes would have become as important to Rebus as Siobhan but he did make an interesting exit,with Rebus making an effort to understand Nell's wishes.

Without referring to the books, I think that Brian Holmes went to Australia (without Nell). I guess I took the question quite literally, lots of stuff happened in the books with Brian before he left.
