Other good authors.

I ran out of Rankin books, having read them all. I will re-read them at some point. I heard about Stuart MacBride on this forum. I just finished Flesh House and really enjoyed it. It was a nice combination of suspense and humour. I have recommended it to several people and am trying to get my reluctant reader 18 year old son to read it.

Henning Mankell is a good author too.... about a policeman in Sweden called Wallander.
Better if read in order.... :)

Also Donna Leon, about a policeman in Venice... Brunetti... :)

On the issue of historical detectives I also really like an American author Owen Parry (real name Ralph Peters). His hero is the Union officer Abel Jones, a Welshman & former British soldier in India, now serving in the US Civil War. He captures both the times and the 'Welshness' of Abel brilliantly.

I'd also like to recommend Henning Mankell and the Kurt Wallander series, as mentioned already by a couple of posters. I've just started reading the books after seeing the TV versions (I think the Swedish films are better than the Branagh version and currently being shown on BBC4) and also a programme about the author and character called 'Who is Kurt Wallander?' Another similarity with Rebus is the importance of location - in Wallander's case the Swedish city of Ystad.

Just finished reading all Stuart McBride's books excellent. Gritty and sometimes violent but with a streak of humour running through

I am a huge fan of The Inspector Lynley series by Elizabeth George.I've just started 'Careless In Red'and am looking forward to seeing how Lynley gets back to living, after the murder of Helen. This follows 'What Came Before He Shot Her',which explained how a boy became a killer.

Like you, I've also read all McBride's books lately, and I really enjoyed them. My only problem, if you could call it a problem, is that it's too MUCH killing to be very realistic (there really IS a limit on how many serial killers you can pack into a city the size of Aberdeen). But the books is well worth spending money and time on. After reading about DS McRae's escapades in the Granite City I went back to read Rankin's Fleshmarket Close for the second (or third) time, and then it dawned on me how fantastic the Rebus books really are (as if I didn't know that already...). This book is in my opinion not the best Rebus novel (but probably top 5), but it still head and tail above what McBride is writing (still my opinion), and as I wrote, I really enjoyed the the McRae novels.

I think it might be the mis en scene that is so fantastic about Rebus books but if you can forget Edinburgh Peter Robinson's detective novels are good, though DCI Banks' personality is less interesting and Robinson's obsession with Banks' musical passion always seems an affectation. I've also recently read all of the James Lee Burke Robicheaux books where New Orleans takes the role of Edinburgh - the same book 17 times really but enjoyable for all that. Henning Mankell also writes exciting stuff - his DCI Wallander is also 'damaged goods'. Then of course there's James Ellroy who seems to have given up writing.

Wallender is an excellent series here on PBS with Kenneth Branagh.I had not known it was based on a series of books and can imagine how interesting they are.Not having yet read a modern mystery set in a Scandinavian country.
But the tv show is so great.
